What is the Nautical Institute?

The Nautical Institute is the international professional body for qualified seafarers and others with an interest in nautical matters. We provide a wide range of services to enhance the professional standing and knowledge of members who are drawn from all sectors of the maritime world.

Our aim is to provide the strongest possible professional focus, dedicated to improving standards of those in control of seagoing craft, while maintaining the Institute as an international centre of nautical excellence.

Our objectives are to promote and co-ordinate in the public interest the development of nautical studies in all its branches by:

  • Encouraging and promoting a high standard of qualification, competence and knowledge among those in control of seagoing craft including non-displacement craft.
  • Facilitating the exchange and publication of information and ideas on nautical science, encourage research and publish its results.
  • Establishing and maintaining appropriate educational and professional standards of membership.
  • Co-operating with Government Departments and other bodies concerned with statutory and other qualifications, and with universities and other educational institutes and authorities in the furtherance of education and training in nautical science and practice.
  • Encouraging the formation of Branches and professional groups in different areas worldwide.

About Us - Your Local Branch

The South East branch of the Nautical Institute aims to:

  • promote local activities and professional development opportunities,
  • to foster communication and fellowship with other nautical bodies such as IMarEST,
  • to represent NI interests on local and national regulatory bodies,
  • to increase its membership in the area.

The Nautical Institute is empowered to provide the strongest possible professional focus, dedicated to improving standards of those in control of seagoing craft.

The branch has held successful forums and seminars, the most recent being ‘The Carriage of Hazardous Goods by Sea’.

The branch will continue to organise relevant events to ensure members are well informed and forward-looking.
