The Branch functions under the guidance of an elected committee. 

All committee members are full members of the Nautical Institute, and meet 2 or 3 times a year to discuss branch operation, activities, projects, and future event programming.

We are currently looking for volunteers to stand on the committee, please contact us!

Captain Chris Renault FNI – Honorary Secretary & Council Member (NI Central)

Chris has been in the shipping industry since 1972.  His seagoing career comprised of time served with Fyffes Line, Turnbull Scott, and finally P&O European Ferries, where he sailed as Relief Master.  Chris is now a Class 1 pilot on the Thames Estuary, a position he has held for 12 years.  Chris is a long standing member of the Nautical Institute and his work towards branch activities gained him fellowship status in 2009.  He currently holds  the post of Honorary Secretary of the South East branch, a position he has held for the past 5 years.

Captain Simon Moore MNI – Treasurer & Vice Chairman (seagoing)

Simon is a UK certified Master Mariner who first went to sea in 1995. He progressed quickly through the ranks, obtaining his first command in 2004. He followed a natural path into pilotage & harbour management in 2006, becoming an authorised Class 1 pilot & Duty Harbour Master at the Port of Dover. Simon has been an active member of the Nautical Institute since 2002, being elected to the committee in 2005. A keen supporter of the RNLI, Simon has served 12 years with Dover Lifeboat, before transferring to his local station at Walmer.

Captain Simon Richardson FNI

Simon Richardson is a Master Mariner & Fellow of the Institute with 33 years experience in the ferry industry, which includes 9 years in command. In 1998 he moved ashore into fleet management and has since held positions both as marine auditor and fleet manager. He is currently Head of Safety Management with P&O Ferries. He is on the marine advisory board of CHIRP and is chairman of the Chamber of Shipping Nautical and Communications Panel.

Captain Jason Wiltshire (Else) AFNI – Web Editor & Council Member (NI London)

Jason began his career during a time of great change for the ferry industry. He moved quickly through the ranks, culminating with time in command of both a High-Speed Craft and a conventional Ro-Pax ferry. Jason was elected onto the committee in 2008 and is responsible for our website content, in association with Highflight Design. In 2010, he was invited to stand on the council of the Nautical Institute and was duly elected to serve a 3 year term. Jason is currently a Duty Harbour Master & Class 1 pilot in the Port of Dover.

Peter Russell FNI

Now retired after 50 years at sea and 32 years as a London Pilot, Peter was a Founder Member of The Nautical Institute & called the first meeting of the Dover Branch, following which he was elected a Fellow in 1977. Peter was elected President of the Nautical Institute for the years 1998 - 2000; and continued to serve on the NI Finance & General Purposes Committee and Fellowship Committees. Retaining his sea going connections through a number of organisations he is now winding down with the completion of an autobiography.

Captain Don Cockrill FNI - Chairman, United Kingdom Maritime Pilots Association

Don's seafaring adventures started in 1973 with CP Ships, where he progressed from cadet to Master specialising in petro-chemicals. He joined the Port of London Authority as a pilot in 1991, following a short period in the chemical tanker coastal trade. In recent years, he has been significantly involved with various aspects of pilot training and skill standards with particular emphasis on simulation as well as conventional processes. He has been involved with the UKMPA for over 20 years and took over the chairmanship in late 2010.

Captain Ian D Irving MNI

Ian first went to sea in 1960, serving deep sea on dry-cargo ships and passenger liners. He also served in the Royal Naval Reserve, spent time with the Sail Training Association and served on cross-channel hovercraft. He gained command of cross channel ferries in 1979 before retiring in 2001. Ian is now a Whitstable pilot. He is recognised for his previous work in assisting with the formation of the SE branch and was in fact our first chairman! A past member of council and has served on various working groups in the industry.
